Why should I grind coffee myself? How do I do it?
When coffee is ground it immediately releases gasses that affect both the flavor and aroma of the coffee. Even great coffee loses a significant amount of the crispness of flavor and aromatics within the first few hours after grinding. This is why a quality grinder is as important as a quality brewer. Get a burr grinder with multiple settings since each brewing method utilizes a different coarseness of grind. The correct grind is determined by how long the ground coffee and the hot water are together. The longer the time, the coarser the grind. For example espresso takes just a few seconds so the grind is extra fine whereas in a French press, the extraction process takes place over a number of minutes so the grind is much coarser. See our coffee grinders page for more information.
