Upcoming Limited Edition Roasts

Roasting Monday December 1st -
2008 El Salvador Cup of Excellence winner Matalapa

We have been proud to present Matalapa as a regular offering now for Reserve Webover two years. We offered it as a Vienna Roast. This Cup of Excellence Matalapa lot is very small and was prepared for the competition. There is a growing consensus in our specialty ranks that El Salvador may be producing the sweetest coffees in Central America. The Matalapa is an excellent example. Its acidity is refined and distinct but not pronounced. The flavors are rich, creamy almond butter, juicy caramel and a touch of orange with sweet lime. Those who really like Daterra Reserve should try this coffee; it is a perfect bridge from Brazil to the fruitier Central American coffees. Also, we are roasting it Full Flavor, so this is your chance to taste a beautifully milled classic El Salvador Bourbon variety coffee.
$22.95 for 12 ounces.

Ndiara Estate, Kirinyaga, Kenya
Roasting on Mondays!

Ndiara is another powerful coffee from Kirinyaga, an equal, in my opinion, to Mamuto. If ever there was a coffee that should be called jammy, this is it! (La Esperanza is the Reserve WebColombian version of this!) It presents massive body with a berry fruit-basket of flavors. If you have not tried it you should.

Ndiara is an eight acre farm in the Kirinyaga district on the southern slope of Mt. Kenya at 5,500 feet. It is named after a pre-historic site nearby. Mr. Daniel Waruri Muriuki started it in 1979 when he acquired the land and planted 6,000 Bourbon SL-28 and SL-34 coffee trees; he later added an additional 500 trees.

La Esperanza, Huila , Colombia
Roasting on Mondays!

La Esperanza, is a jammy ripe dark plum saturated coffee, layered with tropical fruits and streaks of honeyed raw sugar cane. It is among the finest of any Colombian I have had, an exemplary coffee revealing a peak expression of Colombian terroir. We will offer this coffee as a special roast only on Mondays. Make sure to order yours ahead of time!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The entire staff at Terroir Coffee wishes you a warm and cheery Thanksgiving!

I think we all need this one even more than usual!
We have a very exciting array of coffees for the holiday season to cover a wide range of flavor preferences. Here are some of the profiles Terroir Coffee offers:

Aromatic floral and berry-soaked coffees

For those who want lively coffees with distinct floral and berry aromatics I recommend coffees from East Africa - namely Kenya and Ethiopia and Panama - the spectacular La Esmeralda is not to be missed! The Ndiara Estate from Kenya and the organic Konga Cooperative from Ethiopia are particularly mouth-coating. Kangocho Cooperative, the great Mamuto Estate and the apricot-flavored Reserve Weborganic Ademe Bedane represent new highs in our collection. Our Kenyas and Ethiopians have reached a new peak.

Nuts and chocolate focused coffees

Central American coffees tend more towards the nuts with varying degrees of chocolate spectrum with sweet citrus notes and can range from mellow and rich, such as El Salvador's Matalapa - the Cup of Excellence micro-lot is especially sweet - and El Molino. A step brighter is Costa Rica's famed La Minita Estate, with its hint of maple syrup), while Guatemala's El Injerto (the only coffee to have won Cup of Excellence's coveted first prize twice) is more lively still with full body and very subtle berry notes. El Salvador Cup of Excellence winner La Lainez is also very lively with extra sweet apple notes.

Brazil's Daterra Reserve is a favorite for those who want dark, floral, mellow chocolate notes with understated acidity.

Sweet Tobacco and cedar-tinged coffee

Our Sumatra Mandheling offers classic heavy body with exceptionally sweet butterscotch notes at its core.

Tropical fruit cocktail flavored coffees

I had no idea what great Colombian coffees tasted like until just a few years ago when I started exploring its great micro-lot producers one by one. Boca Chica has notes of black Ceylon tea along with mellow tropical fruits while Cup of Excellence winner La Esperanza is packed with jammy notes of pineapple, sugar cane and exotic fruits.

Rwanda Coffee returns!

I am hoping that a very fine batch of Rwanda coffee we have purchased arrives next week - we will certainly have it the following! This lot, which I will describe in the next newsletter, is the finest Rwanda we have offered to date. We have not offered any coffees from Rwanda the past two years because we could not get it fresh - the coffee was arriving very late and consequently laden with generic woody notes which overwhelmed the aromatics Rwanda is fast gaining a reputation for among specialty buyers.
