Iced Coffee like never before!

Great iced coffee should always be made with coffee ice cubes; these are simple to make and should have the same strength as your regular brew. No dilution! An even more critical factor is serving iced coffee that has been brewed recently, with 8 hours at the most, preferably far less. Even refrigerated coffee undergoes a change of flavor for the worse – and it is not subtle. Ice cubes, on the other hand, can last days.

A few weeks ago Peter and I made several iced coffees, each with its own ice cubes. We then tasted them side by side. We were amazed at how delicious yet different each coffee was. Iced coffee is the easiest way for a coffee aficionado to wow her friends with a degustation of, say, three radically different, delicious coffees, side by side. You may even discover quite a few folks discovering they really like the iced coffees with no milk or sugar. Take a few sips this way first to get the full impact of the differences. We are very close to chilled wines here.

I think the most dramatic trio is

These three coffees are worlds apart and their differences are somehow heightened when served iced. The Addis Ketema has floral iced tea flavors, while the Karogoto sings of dark fruit. Then comes La Minita: pure nuts and maple syrup! Once you drink these coffees iced they may never taste the same hot. New indelible dimensions will have been added to your sensory memory bank!

Terroir Coffee's light ‘full flavor' roasts are ideal for iced coffee. They cleanse the palate and quench thirst while delivering loads of fruit, nuts and floral flavors. Enjoy!

Buy any two and get $3.00 off or buy all three and get $5.00 off. Good throughout August ! Click here.

New! 1st Place 2007 Cup of Excellence winner, La Esperanza to be roasted next Wednesday, August 15.

We received our Colombia Cup of Excellence first prize winner, La Esperanza, just before July 4. How appropriate! This is a jammy ripe dark plum saturated coffee, layered with tropical fruits and streaks of honeyed raw sugar cane. It is among the finest of any Colombian I have had before, an exemplary coffee revealing a peak expression of Colombian terroir .

Farmer Isaias Cantillo tells his story:

“Before having my own farm, I was a hand picker and I traveled to different provinces according to the harvest seasons. I picked coffee in Huila, Tolima and also Caldas state. After several years working as a picker, I had the chance to buy my own farm from my uncle. That was 18 years ago. The price of the farm was 240.000 Colombian pesos at that time, I paid 200.000 pesos to my uncle directly and with the first crop I had, which was red beans, I paid the balance. In 1987 I planted the first 3000 coffee seeds. At that time, I met Nydia, who is my wife. We got married in 1988 and we have now 5 children (4 boys and 1 girl). Thanks to the coffee all my children have had the chance to get primary and middle school education.

“I am conscious of the environment preservation. For that reason all the coffee is shade grown in the farm. The farm also has two natural sources of fresh water, which I really take good care of, because I know the importance of the water for our lives. I don't burn; I prefer to pick by hand all the weeds.

“I am a member of the Second Cooperative of Huila, called COOCENTRAL. So I have had the chance to see the cupper in the Coop, and I follow his suggestions. I always bring to the coop excellent quality coffee, and to get this quality I only pick the ripe beans, not the green or the overripe ones, because I know how important this is for the quality of the cup. Washing is done only with clean and fresh water from the natural sources I have in the farm and drying process is done in patios.”

La Esperanza will be roasted next Wednesday, August 15. $41.95 per 12 oz roasted. Please call (866) 444-5282 to make reservations.

El Injerto 2006 is in

You may have noticed a change in our El Injerto from Huehuetenango , Guatemala recently – and your senses did not deceive you. We have run out of the 2005 crop and entered the 2006. It is distinctly better. It arrived to us fresher and it has greater complexity, with wonderfully crisp sweet citrus notes. Still our favorite Guatemala coffee.

Kigutha, Kiambu, Kenya replaces Gathiru-ini

Kigutha Estate is a cooperative society of 25 members on 242 acres of farm in the district of Kiambu (same district as Gathiru-ini) just a few miles north of Nairobi . It is situated at 5,400 feet above sea level in the Kamiti Valley . This coffee's strong black-currant notes are particularly suited to a slightly darker full flavor roast, ideal for French Press coffeemakers. Makes a great dark-berry flavored iced coffee.
