What's Happening at the George Howell Coffee Company

Mother's Day is May 13th.

We suggest you delight Mom with some very special tastes for this festive occasion. I have several suggestions that should sweep her off her feet. What could be more important on that special Sunday than that first critical hour in the morning?

Featured Coffee for Mother's Day

Limited edition Cup of Excellence Presidential Winner Los Planes from El Salvador will be specially roasted this Monday, May 7.

This unique micro-lot coffee is 100% Pacamara, which is a variety of Arabica that produces huge lovely dense coffee beans with a distinctive elegant flavor. The specially prepared micro-lot from Los Planes farm is exceptionally sweet, beautifully balanced, densely packed with flavors of choice nuts, embedded passion fruit, plum and an elegant persimmons-beeswax accent.

We have a very limited supply. Call us at (866) GHH-JAVA or order through our website. $34.95 per 12 oz.

Technivorm- Finest Automatic Drip Coffeemaker on the Planet

The Technivorm is made in Holland and is very well designed, and manufactured to extremely high standards using high quality European components. The Technivorm controls water temperature and dwell time with a precision other machines lack and which is crucial to bring out the refined nuances Terroir Coffee specializes in. Our new COO, Vince Fedele, coffee fanatic since early Coffee Connection days and a major techie, gives a detailed rundown on "what's under the hood." Two models are available a brewer with glass carafe for $182 and a thermal version for $205. Click here for more details, Vince's article and/or to purchase.

La Minita is back!

I am thrilled to say that the 2007 La Minita crop from Tarrazu , Costa Rica has just arrived, is available for purchase, and, most important of all, that it is outstanding. Peter and I just cupped it and found the cup to be exceptionally balanced and very full bodied. It has gravitas, as Peter likes to say. $13.95 per 12 oz.

Kenya Grand Cru Mamuto 2006

Most recently our Mamuto took Tom Ashbrook of On Point on NPR by storm. No other coffees have the sweet blackberry - black currant flavor profiles the finest Kenyas have and this lot of Mamuto is an ultimate expression of it. Our supplies are nearing an end. $15.95 per 12 oz.

Colombia, Maria Santos' Los Sauces
This was the other coffee which really caught Tom's attention. This coffee represents the new coffee face of Colombia. There is a nectar-sweetness here that few coffees can match. Click here . $14.95 per 12 oz.

ON POINT, NPR Radio
Hear the full broadcast of George Howell with Tom Ashbrook and Corby Kummer on ON POINT, NPR radio. I spent an hour with NPR's Tom Ashbrook and food writer extraordinaire Corby Kummer on April 13 talking about coffee. It was a great time! You can listen to it here .

Kenya Update

All of East Africa has been worrisome this year. By mid April we would have been half way through our Kenya -purchasing for the coming year. We had nothing: good coffees could be had, but there was nothing with that defining blackberry aroma. Then came Mamuto with a tiny lot of exceptional coffee and we snatched it up. It is rare for us to buy from the same coop or farm in Kenya two years in a row, since the very finest quality lots move from one to another each year as if illuminated by a heavenly spotlight from above that was manipulated by an unseen choreographer. Now we have just cupped another larger, terrific lot from Kahindu in the Muranga district. What memories! The last time I had Kahindu was in the days of The Coffee Connection in the early nineties. While we do not have all we need, I feel assured now that we will have great Kenyas this year, despite apparent scarcity. I cannot imagine being in the coffee-origins business without a fine Kenya. In the meanwhile enjoy the 2006 Mamuto . It is one of the great all-time classic productions of Kenya's unique coffees and it is in pristine condition.
