New Coffee – We are excited to announce a beautiful Cup of Excellence coffee this week, the Colombian El Lechal.
New Coffee – Colombia Cup of Excellence Winner, El Lechal, Cauca, Colombia
The El Lechal farm, like almost all our other great Colombians these past two years, is in the Cauca district. In English El Lechal means “the suckling”. It is less than 6.25 acres in size, with moderate rainfall. It stands at an altitude of 5,900 feet.
Their small lot was a 2005 Cup of Excellence Award Winner. We were very impressed by this sweet coffee and successfully bid for it on the Cup of Excellence International Internet Auction. The farmer, who has two permanent employees, received 85% of the proceeds, per Cup of Excellence policy.
We went to extreme lengths to preserve all of this coffee's character. Green, raw coffee starts oxidizing the minute it is exposed to air. The disintegration process accelerates when raw coffee is exposed to the high temperatures and humidity of a tropical port. Rather than ship it in the traditional 154 lb. open-laced jute bags we had the coffee packaged in extra-thin 13 pound, vacuumed, transparent food-grade plastic bags which were then boxed for extra protection. This special procedure required Colombian drug inspectors with sniffing dogs to be present at all times! The coffee arrived in pristine condition and we immediately applied our world-unique freezing system to present our customers, eight months later, with this 2006 summer delight.
The brewed cup is medium-bodied and packed with honeyed citrus and pomegranate mingling with soft streaks of aromatic, ripe pear and a touch of chocolate truffle. Cheers! This fine coffee is available now online for $14.95 per 12 oz Roasted.
Coming to the Terroir Coffee collection – First Place Guatemala Cup of Excellence Winner, the El Injerto
A specially prepared lot of new crop El Injerto Farm coffee won first place in the prestigious Guatemala Cup of Excellence® award this May, receiving glowing descriptions and an average score of well over 90 points from over twenty international cupping jurors. We are not surprised. Not only is El Injerto situated in a unique part of the great growing region of Huehuetenango, but El Injerto applies extraordinary diligence to every phase of production, insuring remarkable quality every year.
This is why Terroir Coffee has steadfastly sold this coffee for several years. El Injerto has consistently won awards in competitions, including earlier Cup of Excellence events.
The boutique-size lot that won the competition was from a single day’s harvest, specially prepared and strictly sun-dried. Cup of Excellence auctioned the coffee on the Internet this past Tuesday and competition by boutique roasters around the world was fierce. It sold at $25.20 per pound, green (raw) – to be shipped from Guatemala. Terroir Coffee was one of the winning bidders. We will be roasting this coffee from time to time for special events like Thanksgiving, which will be announced, of course, in our newsletter. This is something only Terroir Coffee can do correctly, being the only roaster to freeze raw coffee, after very special Terroir repackaging, preserving it from the steady degradation and oxidation raw coffee is subject to during common storage practice today, even among boutique quality roasters. In the meanwhile, enjoy the current El Injerto we are offering, one of the great coffee expressions today, which is now available online for $11.95 per 12 oz Roasted.
Coffee Tip – Avoid the temptation to serve coffee before the brewer finishes.
Eager for that morning cup of coffee, and tempted to take a cup before the brewer is finished? You might want to wait that extra minute for a better, fuller flavor. Since coffee is brewed strongest at the beginning of a brew, it may taste over extracted if served early. A complete brew provides a balanced, consistent cup of coffee.
